projects :: BMW Double Spoke M Wheel
[07-01-2003] - Just a quick rendering of the final wheel.

[06-11-2003] - I built a quick proxy mesh so that I could play around with water effects. I slapped a quick MutliRes modifer on it then worked the mesh a little by hand. I had to apply another smooth modifier to get rid of the odd shading creted by optimization. The tire was just roughed on there I will model a more realistic hi rez one later for the primary mesh.

[06-01-2003] - Its pretty clear that it turned out to be an ubber dense mesh. Then again making the cutouts for the emblum were easier because it was a poly mesh. After replicating 5 of the continous pieces I just welded the seams and it truned out pretty well. I went though and added the M badge, center logo and air valve.

[05-22-2003] - If only I had nurbs. Turns out that the after hours of work, it was near impossible to stich the different surfaces into one nice patchwork so I had to collapse it down to a mesh. Obvious down side being the high density of the mesh. I then replicated along the seem that needed to be welded and I made sure that the geometry would be smooth across the region I would weld.

[05-20-2003] - For this wheel I had a nice hi res image of the tire to work with. I begain by bulding my spline cage. I used some other views to get the depth and general curvate of the wheel using just splines. The images show all the segments, but I divided the wheel up into 10 segments and replicate the rest.

After I built the wire cage, I tried some poly techniques but I gave up and slapped on a surface modifier after making quads with my splines. It really got the shape of the wheel just right and it was much nicer then the results I was getting with the polys. I ended up creating sevral surfaces instead of one big one since I wanted to hand work the edges.
